The
candy cane may seem to have nothing to do with Christmas, but if you look
closely at the shape, you'll see that it resembles a shepherd's crook.
According to legend, in 1690, the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral handed out the first candy canes. He wanted something to keep his young singers quiet during the Living Nativity ceremony and he requested that the sugar sticks be bent into the shape of shepherd crooks in honor of the shepherds who were the first to know of the birth of Christ. At the turn of the century, the red and white stripes and peppermint that we've come to associate with candy canes were introduced. |
