The Story of Cupid
Cupid was a God in Roman Mythology...he was the son of Venus so he comes by his charms and affinity for love naturally, his father was Mars. (He was known as Eros in Greek mythology and his mother was Aphrodite) We see him as a cherubic child who aims arrows at hearts and pierces them with love.
Cupid was ordered by his mother to punish Psyche, a mortal woman who was beautiful
enough to make Venus jealous. She was so beautiful that people traveled miles
just to see her and paid her beauty tribute that Venus felt should only be
offered to her. Cupid took one look at her and fell in love. He made her his
wife but forbade her to look at him because he was a god and asked her, "have
you any doubt of my love? have you any wish ungratified? If you saw me, perhaps
you would fear me, perhaps adore me, but all I ask of you is to love me. I
would rather you would love me as an equal than adore me as a god."
They were very happy in their golden palace until Psyche fell prey to human curiosity and took a look at her love. Cupid left her and the gardens and castles all disappeared as he flew from her side.
Psyche made her way to the temple of Venus where she was given impossible
tasks. She was aided in accomplishing the tasks by Cupid and the god of the
river. Venus then told her to go to Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, who lived
in the underworld. She was told to ask for some of Proserpine's beauty to
be placed in a box and to bring it back without looking into the box.
She was helped to navigate the dangerous underworld and managed to aquire the box but on her travels back, she couldn't resist looking in. Instead of beauty, the box contained a Stygian sleep which took possession of her immediately.
Cupid could not bear her loss and flew to her. He placed the deadly sleep
back in the box and Psyche took it to Venus while Cupid implored Jupiter to
help their cause. Jupiter sent Mercury to fetch Psyche and he gave her a cup
of ambrosia which made her an immortal.
Psyche and Cupid bore a daughter named Pleasure and they stayed united forever.
